FC Tucson ties FC Arizona to stay unbeaten

FC Arizona found a way to counter all of FC Tucson’s punches in an intense 2-2 Women's Premier Soccer League draw in a match between the top two teams in the Desert Conference.

The game started fast with a signature flip throw-in from Jaden Bailey which found the head of Erin Craig. FC Arizona’s goalkeeper Kayla King swatted the ball away only to find the feet of Luz Duarte. Duarte lofted the ball over the goalie but the shot hit the crossbar. Finally, the ball landed on Trinity Morales’s head, who put the ball in the back of the net in the ninth minute.

FC Tucson has swept through its first three Women's Premier Soccer League games, outscoring its opponents 9-2 and taking an early lead in the Desert Conference.

The team will get an opportunity to put even room between itself and its nearest challenger when it travels to Campo Verde High School Stadium in Gilbert Saturday (7 pm PT) for a match against FC Arizona.

Luz Duarte leads FC Tucson with four goals, while Erin Craig has three apiece and Jaden Bailey has two.

This is FC Arizona’s second year in the Desert Conference. The team is coached by Tara Koleski, who was the previous head coach for the Dominican University of California and was appointed head coach of FC Arizona on March 1, 2021.

Following the first road game of the season for the FC Tucson Women’s team, the domination that happened in Vegas likely won’t stay in Vegas. 

FC Tucson Women scored a season-high five goals against the only other undefeated team in the Desert Region of the Women's Premier Soccer League.

The road opener started in the 17th minute with Jaden Bailey firing in a cross that found the head of Luz Duarte. The Atomic City FC keeper Chloe Dody made a spectacular save, but the rebound fell to Erin Craig who smashed it into the back of the net right before the water break, giving FC Tucson the 1-0 lead.

For the rest of the half, FC Tucson kept the pressure on but could not find the back of the net.

The game picked up right after halftime in the 48th minute with Craig capitalizing on a mistake by the Atomic City FC defenders and firing a shot from the top of the 18. Yet again, Dody made a great save but the rebound found the feet of Bailey who put the ball in the back of the net making it 2-0.

Atomic City FC responded quickly with a goal of their own eight minutes later with a cross into the box that found the head of winger Allyssa Larkin. 

FC Tucson shifted into high gear after conceding the one goal and scored three unanswered goals. The first came in the 65th minute with Hailey Harris finding the former Mexican national team member Duarte, who sent a rocket into the back of the net with her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

It took only two minutes for Bailey to finish off her brace and put FC Tucson up by three goals.  Finally, Craig finished off the game by scoring her second goal in the 90th minute leading to the 5-1 victory.

The FC Tucson Women are now the only undefeated team and top of the table in the WPSL West Region as they look to continue its streak at FC Arizona on June 19.

Erin Craig scored in the first half and Luz Duarte added a second in the final 45 minutes of a 2-1 win over FC Arizona at Kino North Stadium on Wednesday night.

The FC Tucson Women are in first place in the WPSL Desert Conference with six points. 

“It was a little ugly, but we got the job done,” FC Tucson Women coach Kelly Pierce said. “But a win is a win I have learned over the years.”

The FC Tucson Women picked up their second win in as many games to start the 2021 season with both of their goals coming from their talented up-front duo.

It seemed only fitting that the bright start to the FC Tucson Women’s season would come from a player whose first name is Spanish for “light.”

Former Mexican national team player Luz Duarte scored in each half to help the Women in Black pick up a 2-1 victory over the El Paso Surf at Kino North Stadium on Friday night. The season opener was the first match the FC Tucson Women had played since the end of the 2019 season after having their 2020 season canceled by the pandemic. 

“She’s a great leader out there,” FC Tucson Women coach Kelly Pierce said of Duarte. “She obviously is a beast on the field. She’s unstoppable. Her passion for this game just gives me goosebumps. She kicks the game up a level.”

And it was her piledriver of a kick that started the scoring. Duarte struck a lightning bolt with her right foot just outside the 18-yard box to make it 1-0 in the 23rd minute.

The Women in Black continued to pressure El Paso with most of the first half being played in the Surf’s end of the field. FC Tucson saw a couple of shots go over the bar, one-shot deflected to the keeper and a rocket go wide after Duarte made a series of twists and turns that left her open.

El Paso started the second half with more vigor and had a few chances, but it was FC Tucson that got on the scoreboard next. Duarte lofted a wonderful shot into the top right corner to make it 2-0.

FC Tucson Women Announce 2021 Season Return, Player Trials & Technical Staff

Tucson’s Women’s side resumes play after year-long hiatus; WPSL Desert Division Coach of the Year Kelly Pierce returns as Head Coach

TUCSON, Ariz. (April. 27, 2021) — FC Tucson announced today that the club’s women’s side, FC Tucson Women (FCTW), will return to play for the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) 2021 summer season. With this announcement, the club looks to build its roster through a player trials event led by Head Coach Kelly Pierce. 

“After a year-long hiatus, we are delighted to make this long-awaited announcement of FC Tucson Women’s return to action,” said Amanda Powers, President of FC Tucson. “Our women’s side is a major piece of our club and I can’t wait to see much more success for Kelly Pierce and her staff. This club is committed to growing the game at all levels and this commitment would not be possible without FC Tucson Women.”

FC Tucson Women returns to play after the WPSL’s April of 2020 decision to forgo the 2020 season due to COVID-19. FCTW will kick off its 2021 WPSL campaign at Kino North Stadium against El Paso Surf on Friday, June 4 at 7 pm MST, followed by three home matches and four away matches in WPSL Desert Conference play. 

The club will build its roster through a player trials event that will be held on Sunday, May 16 at the Kino Sports Complex. 

Former FC Tucson Women player and captain, Kelly Pierce, will return as the club’s head coach. The Tucson native was first named the club’s head coach ahead of the 2019 season and earned WPSL Desert Division Coach of the Year honors in her first year at the helm. In 2019, Pierce led FCTW to a 6-1-1 record, tied for first atop the Desert Division. Charlie MacCabe will serve as the team administrator, having led FCTW’s team operations since the team’s inception in 2013. MacCabe was one of the key figures in the development of Tucson’s Women’s Premier Soccer League franchise and brings soccer coaching experience from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Tennessee.

“Our whole staff and everyone behind the scenes is very excited to come back,” said Kelly Pierce. “The WPSL hiatus was unfortunate but it was the safest thing to do at the time. We are excited about the coming season and have every expectation that we will be bringing some quality women’s soccer to Kino Stadium again this year.”

FC Tucson will compete in their sixth season WPSL season and currently hold an overall 26-11-8 record. During the 2018 season, FC Tucson only recorded one loss in the regular season and reached the WPSL Regional Finals for the West Region after finishing second in the regular-season conference standings.

TUCSON, Arizona (Jan. 21, 2020) — FC Tucson announced that Amanda Powers has taken the reins as the club’s first-ever President. A San Diego, California native, Powers arrives in Tucson following a successful run as start-up Chief Operating Officer for New Mexico United, a USL Championship team that had arguably one of the best expansion club performances and led the league in attendance, ticket, and merchandise sales.

“I love this game, I love this city, and I’m honored and excited to use soccer as a vehicle to build community and to honor the unique heritage that makes Tucson special,” said Powers of her new role. “We’re not trying to recreate the success of New Mexico United. We’re trying to find that same authentic spirit and build a team and game experience around that, for us, by us.”

Powers is the second-ever female club president in U.S. men’s professional soccer history.

“Amanda brings the right level of dedication to this team, and a unique skill-set that will serve this community well,” said Bobby Dulle, General Manager for Phoenix Rising FC. “Her background in marketing and community activism, coupled with her business acumen and league-specific experience, are exactly what this club needs.”

FC Tucson was purchased by the Phoenix Rising FC ownership group in 2018 with a goal to advance the sport throughout the state. In 2019, Phoenix Rising FC orchestrated FC Tucson’s promotion into professional soccer’s third division, USL League One. 

Powers is a former member of the USL Board of Governors and has served as a trusted advisor and franchise builder for USL Championship ownership groups across the country. With a background in international economics, Powers has also advised teams on stadium feasibility, go-to-market strategies, and building foundational systems that meet the demanding needs of pro sports teams.

In terms of her plans for FC Tucson, which enters its tenth season this year, “we have an amazing front office and talented technical team, not to mention one of FC Tucson’s Founder’s, Jon Pearlman (FC Tucson Director of Soccer Operations)” said Powers. “We’re thinking big, and when you think big, the world gets bigger.”

FC Tucson Women Name Former Standout Kelly Pierce New Head Coach

Tucson, AZ (May 2, 2019) — Former FC Tucson Women player and captain, Kelly Pierce, has been named as the club’s new head coach.  Pierce replaces Amy Garelick, FCTW’s only head coach during its first six seasons. 

“I’m honored to be FC Tucson Women’s new head coach.  I am deeply invested in the growth and development of women’s soccer in our community and I hope to make a positive impact this season. I am excited to be back and eager to get started.”  

A Tucson native, Pierce won back-to-back state championships as the head coach at her alma matter Salpointe Catholic High School. Pierce had a sterling four-year career as a player at Salpointe where she won two state championships and was a first-team all-state player.  She then went on to play at Pima Community College and one season with the Sonoran Thunder.

 “Our program should be a place for current college players to train, stay fit, and get competitive games during their off-season. It’s also great for the community to get out and watch high-level women’s soccer.  It gives little girls a chance to watch a positive female role model; something for them to shoot for in the future. "

Garelick leaves FCTW with a 31-20-10 record in six seasons.  FCTW enjoyed its finest season in 2018, winning the Pac South Division and reaching the West Region Conference final, before losing to the eventual national champion, Seattle Sounders Women.  For her leadership. Garelick was named Pac South coach of the year.  

“We would like to thank both Amy and Todd Garelick for their tremendous service as our first and only coaches for FC Tucson Women.  Their dedication and leadership from the beginning provided the foundation that has allowed this program to thrive.   Kelly Pierce has been a captain and a key team leader since the inception of our women's program and we are sure she will continue our tradition of success on the field and in the community.” Jon Pearlman, Director of Soccer Operations stated.

Pierce had a sterling four-year career as a player at Salpointe where she won two state championships and was a first-team all-state player.  She then went on to play at Pima Community College and one season with the Sonoran Thunder.

 “Our program should be a place for current college players to train, stay fit, and get competitive games during their off-season. It’s also great for the community to get out and watch high-level women’s soccer.  It gives little girls a chance to watch a positive female role model; something for them to shoot for in the future. “

Garelick leaves FCTW with a 31-20-10 record in six seasons.  FCTW enjoyed its finest season in 2018, winning the Pac South Division and reaching the West Region Conference final, before losing to the eventual national champion, Seattle Sounders Women.  For her leadership. Garelick was named Pac South coach of the year.  

“We would like to thank both Amy and Todd Garelick for their tremendous service as our first and only coaches for FC Tucson Women.  Their dedication and leadership from the beginning provided the foundation that has allowed this program to thrive.   Kelly Pierce has been a captain and a key team leader since the inception of our women’s program and we are sure she will continue our tradition of success on the field and in the community.” Jon Pearlman, Director of Soccer Operations stated.
