TUCSON – FC Tucson Women picked up its first win of the regular season on Friday, shutting out SD Parceiros Ladies 2-0 at Kino North Stadium. FC Tucson bounced back from a season-opening loss to Los Angeles Galaxy San Diego on Tuesday.
Brianna Barreiro put the club on the board first to take a 1-0 lead. After a Meghan Cavanaugh shot was deflected inside the Parceiro box, Barreiro jumped on a rebound and slid a low attempt into the corner of the net. It was her second goal in two matches for the club.
“Obviously we want to be the first ones to score,” Barreiro said. “It was bouncing around a little bit, I was able to take it off the volley and luckily it ended up in the back of the net.”
It didn’t take long for Treena Ferguson to double Tucson’s lead in the second half. Just minutes after the intermission, Ferguson got on the end of a corner kick and directed a header inside the far post. It put the game out of reach.
“I saw the ball coming and it was in a position I could get to,” Ferguson said. “So I just thought I was going to fight through the crowd and just try to get the highest and head it in. Luckily, it came right to me.”
Ferguson said the team's aggressiveness helped it bounce back from the loss to Galaxy.
“We saw (after losing earlier this week) that we needed to step up our game," she said. "We came out with a strong attitude tonight and came to get it done.”
Head coach Amy Garelick was also pleased to see her team respond to some adversity early in the season.
“Each game we’re building,” she said. “We struggled that first 20 minutes again starting the game. We did a much better job of finishing our chances. At halftime we cleaned up some things defensively.”
FC Tucson Women will be back on the pitch Saturday, hosting the San Diego Sealions at Kino North Stadium. That match kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available at www.fctucson.com.
