TUCSON, Ariz. — The FC Tucson Women close host the season tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Kino North Stadium for the Women’s Season Finale, Presented by Long Realty.
After a strong second half effort last night against Strikers FC that featured goals from Paige Maggio and Jessica Raybe, the women will look to close out the season on a three-game win streak.
Maggio broke the deadlock in 72nd minute with a rocket that found the top corner, which will undoubtedly be up for goal of the season honors. Raybe provided the second minutes later, ensuring Tucson rolled into tonight with momentum on its side.
The finale takes place against an FC Pacific side that the women handed a 2-0 loss to in the season opener.
Head coach Amy Garelick believes the season has been a successful one for the club, particularly with the progression of players that have worked for years in the system to get better.
“It’s really a blink of the eye, then the season is over,” Garelick said. “It’s been so fun to see some of these young kids that were freshmen, 8th graders when we first saw them that are now on our team getting minutes.”
“It’s been a lot of fun seeing some of our older players evolve into mentors for them. It’s been a great experience and there’s nothing like it.”
That feeling of community is what attracted Long Realty agents Brian Connelly, Denice Osbourne, and Matt Bollinger to FC Tucson.
Each broker has a daughter involved with the women’s team this season, and feel empowering women through the “beautiful game” is the way to cultivate the game in our community.
Garelick has given the opportunity to several high-schoolers this Summer of what it means to get a taste of WPSL action.
“When our younger players get a chance to play against them or with them, we call it ‘Welcome to the big leagues’ – they’re going to get rocked on a tackle, a shot you think is in is going to get saved, it’s a great opportunity to see what that next level is.”
The season finale kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Kino North Stadium, be sure to support the Women as they close out 2017.
