After capping off a stellar senior season at the University of New Mexico, Madison Irwin returns to her hometown as FC Tucson kick off their Women’s Premier Soccer League season.
Irwin will return to the place she set records, including breaking the record at Catalina High School for most goals scored in a season (32) as a senior, which capped off her 75-goal career with the Trojans.
Irwin played under FC Tucson coaches Amy and Todd Garelick at Tucson Soccer Academy throughout high school, earning her club two state championships.
“I owe Amy and Todd so much for my success,” Irwin said. “I don’t think I would have played in college without them. We’ve built a very special relationship – there’s a lot of mutual respect as I get older and hopefully wiser.”
Irwin closed out her senior season with a career high six goals and three assists, helping the Lobos to a 9-7-3 record in the Mountain West Conference.
“The season finished in the fall so it’s really fun to be back out here with the girls playing competitively, it’s nice to be home and be able to hang out with my family.”
Irwin was also a standout volleyball player at Catalina High School, but with conflicting schedules, she ultimately chose the pitch over the court.
Check out Maddie at Kino this Friday and Saturday night as the women take the field for their 2017 home opener.
