Chapman Tucson Champions League matches to be played before FC Tucson matches; men’s winner to play FC Tucson on Sat. July 6.

Tucson, AZ (Wednesday, April 24, 2013) — Today, FC Tucson announced the creation the Chapman Tucson Champions League (CTCL), a series of matches that involve the major adult leagues in Tucson and Southern Arizona: Arizona Soccer League, Guanajuato AZ Soccer League, Menlo Soccer League, Tucson Metro Soccer League, Tucson Women’s Soccer League and the Tucson Adult Soccer League. The CTCL includes a four-team men’s tournament to determine a future FC Tucson opponent and three additional championship matches. All matches in the CTCL will be played prior to FC Tucson matches during the 2013 season at the Kino Sports Complex North Grandstand and begin at 5:15 p.m.

“FC Tucson is proud to be partnering with these fantastic amateur leagues and their players,” said FC Tucson General Manager Jon Pearlman. “These people put so much into soccer in Tucson and we want to give them the chance to showcase their best teams and amazing leagues.”

Added Chapman General Manager Neb Yonas: “Chapman is a proud supporter of soccer in southern Arizona. We are looking forward to this tournament, one that will bring so many great soccer associations together in the spirit of competition. FC Tucson’s efforts serve as an inspiration to soccer players throughout the region.”

The CTCL men’s tournament will feature the league champions from Arizona League, Guanajunto League, Menlo Soccer League and the TMSL playing in a four-team tournament. The two semifinals will be played on May 18 and June 6. The CTCL men’s championship will be held on June 30. The winner of the men’s CTCL will get to play FC Tucson on July 6.

In addition to the men’s tournament, three other championships will be played prior to FC Tucson matches. The CTCL Coed Championship, featuring the champions of the TASL and TWSL, will be played on July 13. The CTCL Women’s Championship, featuring the top two teams from the TWSL, will be played on July 16. The CTCL over 45 men’s championship, featuring the top two teams from the TASL’s Over 45 Men’s League, will be played on July 20.

The Tucson Women’s Soccer League (TWSL) is one of Tucson’s first adult leagues that started back in the early 1980s and officially incorporated in 1992. TWSL is a volunteer, non-profit league that plays year round at fields all around the city and consists of both coed and women’s divisions. Currently, they have 58 coed teams, 30 women’s open teams and four women’s over 35 teams adding up to over 1600 men and women playing soccer. They offer the community an opportunity to play and enjoy soccer at all levels from competitive to beginner.

“Tucson has the potential to be a big soccer town,” said Tucson Women’s Soccer League president Doreen Koosmann. “If soccer players at every level work together we could put Tucson on the soccer map. TWSL wants FC Tucson to succeed and we are taking every opportunity to assist them with this goal.”

The Tucson Adult Soccer League (TASL) exists for the purpose of providing a safe, fun, and fair soccer league for the participants and their families. They expect league members to act in a positive, friendly, and sporting manner. The TASL in turn provides both an administration and referees who understand and abide by these principles and ensure that violations of these principles are addressed and resolved.

“Tucson Adult Soccer League is excited to support FC Tucson and the sport we both cherish as well as the greater Southern Arizona community” said league president Kaissa Gurvine. “We look forward to a wonderful night of soccer and a large turnout.”

The Tucson Metro Soccer League (TMSL) was formed in the 1970’s to bring adult, recreational soccer to Tucson. From a gathering of a few men to play on Sundays, TMSL has now grown into the largest amateur league in Arizona. It plays year round with as many as 800 players. It operates multiple divisions aimed at adults as young as 18 to as old as 70 from beginners to former professionals. It does this without any taxpayer support or governmental assistance; only dedicated volunteers. For more information, log on at www.tmslsoccer.com.

“The Tucson Metro Soccer League is excited to be a part of the upcoming ‘Champions League’ adult championship matches sponsored by the Chapman Automotive Group along with FC Tucson and delighted to have the opportunity to back initiatives that make a difference, support the game of soccer and the local soccer community,” said TMSL board member Christopher Thomas.

The Menlo Soccer League has been a Tucson staple for nearly 70 years. Named for the park it was based in, today the league is made up of roughly 30 teams and plays most of its matches on Saturdays and Sundays at Ochoa Park. For more information, log on at www.melosoccerleague.wordpress.com.

“(The Chapman Tucson Champions League) is a great opportunity to show who the best team in the men’s leagues is,” said Menlo League President Alex Rangel. “It’s going to be great.”

The Chapman Tucson Champions League matches, and the TSAFC Women matches, are included in season ticket packages. Now all of FC Tucson’s home dates are double headers and fans can watch 20 matches for the price of 10. Season ticket packages are $100 for adults and $80 for youth ages 3-8. Children under the age of three do not need a ticket.
