There are a lot of titles that can be associated with David Villa – World Cup Champion, UEFA Champions League Winner, MLS Most Valuable Player – but now he has the chance at a new one: CARF International MVP of the ’17 Desert Diamond Cup.

Throughout the Desert Diamond Cup, we’ll take a look at some of the most outstanding players from each team competing in Tucson for the Cup.

Coming off a scintillating 2016/2017 campaign, Villa and New York City Football Club are looking to hit the ground running as they work to give the franchise its first MLS Cup.

Villa beat out cross-town rivals and fellow DDC competitors Sacha Kljestan and Bradley Wright-Phillips for MVP, as he propelled his side to the postseason with 23 goals and 4 assists.

The Spaniard will undoubtedly look to carry that momentum over into the 2017 season after a disappointing postseason that saw his team fall to eventual MLS Cup finalist Toronto FC.

Villa remains one of the most popular athletes in the world due in part to his time with Barcelona and the Spanish National Team, where he forged his legacy as one of the most lethal goalscorers in Europe.

He remains Spain’s all-time leading goalscorer with 59 goals in international competitions, including 5 during the 2010 World Cup, tying him with Thomas Müller, Diego Forlan, and Wesley Sneijder for the tournament’s top scorer.

David and NYCFC continue their preseason campaign Saturday, February 18th at 6:30 p.m. as they take on the Houston Dynamo at Kino North Stadium. (TICKETS)
