FC Tucson announced today they will play host to Phoenix Rising FC and the University of Arizona Men’s team on Saturday, April 29th at 7:30 p.m. at Kino North Stadium.
Players from each level of competition – collegiate, semi-pro, and pro – will face off against each other on the same field in a night that celebrates soccer in Arizona.
“I think this is a great opportunity for soccer fans to be able to enjoy three teams at the cutting edge of their respective levels of soccer,” FC Tucson head coach Jon Pearlman said.
For Phoenix Rising FC, the match represents a chance to get some extra work in during a week of training.
“We wanted to make sure we could keep our players match fit during an off week this early in the season,” said Phoenix Rising FC Head Coach Frank Yallop. “FC Tucson has done a tremendous job to make sure youth soccer players in the area have a chance to watch high-level professional soccer in person and we look forward to being a part of that tradition.”
With the addition of international stars Didier Drogba, Omar Bravo, and Shaun Wright-Phillips, Phoenix Rising FC boast the type of quality Tucson has become accustomed to hosting since the addition of MLS Preseason.
“The Phoenix Rising coaching staff, especially Frank Yallop and of course Rick Schantz, along with Arizona’s coach Eric Rhodes, have been instrumental in the growth of FC Tucson’s MLS preseason event and USL PDL team,” Pearlman said.
“This is a great opportunity for younger players in college to have the opportunity to see what it takes to play at the professional level, while also letting us give a homecoming of sorts for Rick Schantz,”
Schantz, who joined the Phoenix staff in the offseason as an assistant coach, will return to Tucson for his first appearance on the sideline since leading the Men in Black to three straight Premier Development League National Semifinals.
